MOV to MP4 with no change to video

Post by bcc » Mon Oct 07, 2019 7:09 pm

I'm new to converting between these containers so please bear with me... it is my understanding that MOV and MP4 are just containers, and that the audio and video are contained within them. All I want to do is change my container from MOV to MP4 without any quality loss and without significantly increasing my file size. Is this possible?

So far I've tried, however this increases my file size x 12:
ffmpeg -i input.avi -c:v libx264 -preset veryslow -qp 0 output.mkv

Any help or insight would be great. Thanks so much!

At first try to change extension from mov to mp4 - mp4 is founded around mov container, if this doesn't help then use COPY to losslessly process your streams - currently you re-encoding video which is neither lossless nor fast and btw you creating not mp4 container but matroska so everything is even more confusing.

this should work accordingly to title of this thread:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i input.avi -c copy output.mp4
albeit it may not accept every codec embeddable in avi container thus if matroska is fine for you then perhaps this will work better:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i input.avi -c copy output.mkv

I don't understand what the irrelevant "input.avi" and "output.mkv" have anything to do with this.
