How to capture audio and dynamically eliminate silence

Post by mmsood » Tue Oct 24, 2017 1:11 pm

I am capturing streaming audio from my sound device and encoding to mp3 with the command below:

ffmpeg -f dshow -i audio="CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable)" -acodec libmp3lame -t 20 outputNone.mp3

Is it possible to have ffmpeg automatically eliminate the silence as it is capturing? As written the file size of the mp3 file steadily increases, but ideally if there are periods of silence I would like to eliminate them such that the mp3 file size does not grow.
