Downton Abbey episodes are now available in x265, starting with
Season 5 episode 2. Consider these for the same episode

x265
297 MB
kickass.so/downton-abbey-s05e08-720p-hdtv-2ch-x265-hevc-psa-t9826367.html

x264
1.44 GB
kickass.so/downton-abbey-5x08-720p-hdtv-x264-fov-eztv-t9825804.html

In this case x265 is 21% the size of x264; that is a huge differnce.
Furthermore, I actually find the quality better with x265. With x264 if you have
a dark, unchanging part of the frame you typically see artifacts where the
B-frames are doing their job. I have noticed with x265 less artifacts in this
case; the blacks are blacker. Now perhaps this is because more data is being
tossed out, but the result is appealing to me.

Zeranoe I think you should review this stuff in-depth ...

For example, our next project is a real-time encoding server using x265 for two important TV channels, and I don't see at this point of its development, GITs breaking something new.

Let me suggest you to take a look at this stuff as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Have you done any research on the repository

- "git bisect" analysis
- issue checking
- PR checking

to be making claims like this?

Thank you for the report.

did/could you set the HIGH_BIT_DEPTH flag for x265?

Also how can I specify a profile for x265?
With x265.exe I can set this parameter: --profile main10
which seems to work for binaries compiled with the HIGH_BIT_DEPTH flag.

but with your ffmpeg build, using the ffmpeg parameter -profile:v main10
gives those errors:
#[libx265 @ 0000000002c72320] Unable to parse option value "main10"
#[libx265 @ 0000000002c72320] Error setting option profile to value main10.
(-profile:v main gives the same error)

with this: -x265-params "profile=main:crf=20"
I get this error:
[libx265 @ 0000000002d7f720] Unknown option: profile.
(the same error for main10)

how can I set the profile, and with it the bit depth? (the hardware-decoder I'm encoding for supports main and main10)
sadly I can't use x265.exe directly, since it doesn't support avisynth, and for the other avisynth-x265 interface I've found "Avs4x265" I could not find any 64bit compiles.
