ffmpeg errors when using ShareX

Post by micmoo » Thu Apr 25, 2019 1:33 am

I'm new so if this is in the wrong place please let me know and offer guidance.

I use ShareX and usually do not have any problems. But occasionally while Screen Recording I get an ffmpeg error and the recording will not play.
The saved mp4 files are often large - for example one is 723MB - so obviously the recording was made but there is something that keeps it from being playable. I assume it has to do with the ffmpeg error.
So my question is: Is there anyway to correct these files so that they will play?
I have unsuccessfully tried to find answers from ShareX so since this relates to ffmpeg I was hoping someone here might be able to help.
Thank you for any help or advice you can provide.
Michael

Do not use mp4 at all. It is bad container as you found out.
It writes crucial info at end of file, and when error happens that info is not provided, resulting in broken file.

Thanks for the advice. What should I use instead of mp4? I'm not very well-versed in technical jargon so laymen terms as much as possible would be appreciated. :)
Thanks again!

Try mkv(Matroska).

Thanks for the advice Richard. So as far as you know is there no way to correct/recover the mp4 files that have the ffmpeg error?
