How do git hashes relate to version numbers?

Post by Artiodactyla »

On the FFmpeg site (ffmpeg.org) it talks about versions in the form 0.7.x, 0.8.x, 09.x etc.
The windows builds here use git hashes. Is it possible to relate one to the other?

Browsing the changelogs and commit pages the hashes are much longer than those used here, and it's not obvious to me how the various hashes and versions are connected.

I'd like to stick to using official releases, but can't work out which Zeranoe builds relate to them. Can anyone help me with the "rules" for matching the hashes used in the Zeranoe builds to the official releases? Thanks.

The releases will be labeled something like: ffmpeg-0.8-win64-static

I take the first 7 characters of the git hashes the come from FFmpeg. It's very unlikely that those 7 characters will show up in that order again so it's a safe way to do things.
