ffmpeg-2.8.6-win32-static.7z compression

Postby Pequi » Fri Feb 05, 2016 11:10 pm

ffmpeg-2.8.6-win32-static.7z is 29Mb, most of the recent stable builds are 12Mb. I compressed the contents with 7-zip with both LZMA and LZMA2 in "ultra" mode and obtained 12Mb 7z archives with both methods.
In the interest of site speed, maybe it should be re-compressed.
Curious, what settings do you use for the stable releases ? I have been unable to duplicate them with previous versions.
TIA

Thank you for notifying me of this.

The new command being used is:

Code: Select all

7z a -t7z -mx=9 -m0=lzma2 "archive.7z" "folder"

The size difference should be apparent with the next build.

I don't know your reason for using a release, but you're missing many features and bug fixes using the releases instead of the git builds. Most users are recommended to use a build derived from current the git master branch which is considered to be stable. Releases are intended mostly for distributors.

I do use non-release builds, but as I frequent other forums, I'd probably be marked as a troll if I notified every new build. The latest stable build is more than enough for the casual user.

As to the compression, the new ones are much smaller. Faster downloads. Thank you developer.

Archive sizes went crazy again. Check out static 32 bit 39MB vs the usual 12MB.
Plus there are THREE builds for 17 jun 2016, but all the readmes are identical.
There is a 2015 folder listed as recent, and a spurious ffmpeg-latest-win32-static.7z at 3.4MB

Hope you are just adjusting the site and have not been hacked.

The bigger files are ZIPs, the smaller file is 7Z. Unfortunately VT won't download more than 32 MB for the ZIPs. OTOH 7zip 1602 still works even in a Windows 2000 VM, just ignore the ZIP. :-P Apparently the file names dropped git, good riddance, but I'd still expect that latest matches something else exactly (= no copy, a hardlink).

I apologize for the confusion, but the site hasn't been compromised.

I've received an influx of negative feedback for the 7z archives recently, and I think it makes more sense to offer the zip format because it is native to Windows.

The git portion of the name was dropped as well because I figured it was redundant.

zip and 7z archives for the latest builds will remain the same, so if you really want 7z you can grab it as the "latest" archive.

Lastly the folder in the latest archive has been renamed to just "ffmpeg-latest-win*-*".
