Debug/Debug output

Are there any debug files available for the libs or is there a mechanism to show debug output?

I'm using Visual studio 2008 and receiving 0 back from a function and then having to read the source code without debug information is definitely not the best way of doing this

That's impossible,
Visual Studio doesn't understand GCC debug information format.
